Why does the throne have to be filled so quickly in Macbeth?

The Scottish throne has to be filled quickly in Macbeth because Scotland was in a state of war. The previous king, Duncan, had been killed in battle, and the kingdom was in danger of being invaded by England. In order to prevent this, the Scottish nobles needed to choose a new king as soon as possible.
