How to Make a Pinocchio Nose

You can make a Pinocchio style nose using paper mache, to recreate the scene in the tale of Pinocchio in which the nose of a living wooden puppet grows extremely long when he tells a lie. You may want to use the long nose as part of a costume for a play or halloween. Paper mache modeling can be a fun activity for the entire family to enjoy, although children may need help to make the paper mache paste.

Mix half a cup of flour with four cups of water. Once mixed place the mixture on the stove bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and add three tablespoons of salt. Leave the mixture to cool. The paper mache paste is now ready for use.

Cut up three sheets of white paper into small strips. Cover your face in petroleum jelly for protection and tie your hair back if you have long hair. Make a mold of your nose by dipping strips of paper into the paper mache paste and placing them over your nose. Leave the area underneath the nose open to allow you to breathe easily. Add three layers of paper strips and leave for fifteen minutes, until the paper mache begins to dry. Remove the mold and leave it to dry completely. Make a small hole in either side of the nose using a pin. Thread a length of elastic between the holes and make a knot in each end. The elastic will secure the nose to your face like a mask when it is finished.

Roll up length of card and secure with tape to form a long cylinder. Fit one hollow end over the tip of the molded nose and secure with masking tape. Cover the entire card nose with three layers of paper mache strips and leave to dry for 24 hours before painting.
