School Mascot & Colors

Mascots are a creative and exciting way to show pride in your school. Mascots are personified emblems created as costumes and worn by a member of a cheerleading squad during activities and sporting events. Deciding on a school mascot may include a committee of people and must be approved by principals and often school board representatives. Mascot ideas and designs should be fun and colorful, evoking joy and good humor out of audiences and crowds alike.
  1. Animals Are Fun

    • Consider an animal mascot. Mascot animals should project power and potency and represent the physical environment of your neighborhood or community. This is a wise way to show a connection between the student body and the town. Selecting a dolphin or shark as a mascot may be appropriate if the school is located near an ocean or shoreline. Incidentally, a stallion or a bull is an ideal choice for a school in a farming community.

    Acknowledge Your History

    • Consider your school's history. Select a mascot commensurate with positive history relating to the area. For example, Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, in Frederick, Md., is situated on the property previously owned by Thomas Johnson, the state's first governor. According to the Historical Marker Database, during the height of the Civil War, "the Army of the Potomac's large Artillery Reserve occupied these grounds." Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner, was also born in Frederick. GTJHS selected a patriot as its mascot to represent the community's national and cultural significance.

    Think Out of the Box

    • Inventing a mascot design is a wise way to project authenticity. The mascot may be humorous and colorful, such as a clown or parrot. Alternatively, upholding a Titan mascot, like those at Todd Beamer High School, located in Washington State, support a representation of strength and courage. Todd Beamer was one of the passengers and lauded heroes who lost his life on United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001.

    Use Stand-Out Colors

    • Choose colors that match the theme and design of your mascot. The Baltimore Orioles baseball team, for example, use a black and orange oriole bird as their mascot. If you are selecting a dolphin as your mascot, like Lake Doloff Elementary School, located in Washington State, consider royal blue and white as your colors. If your mascot is a dragon, on the other hand, choose sharp, sea blue for the eyes and a bold lime green as the skin. Add spunk to the body with bright purple dots or a multicolored tongue or fangs. Vibrant yellows, oranges and greens can project well off of stage or stadium lighting. You can even highlight your mascot with glittery gold or silver for added glamour.
