Mascot Tricks

Mascots are part of the pageantry of game play. Existing at the junior high, high school, collegiate and even professional levels, mascots are colorful and diverse. Mascots exist to entertain fans and spectators and to get the crowd at amateur and professional events loud and engaged in the game. For sports that also have cheerleading squads, the mascots may often work with the cheerleaders to perform humorous stunts or to launch giveaways like T-shirts into the crowd.
  1. Tackle the Opponent

    • One humorous crowd pleaser is to tackle the opposing team's mascot at center of the playing surface before the game begins. Work out an arrangement with the other team's mascot beforehand about what you will do and how you will stage the tackle. Agree to allow the other mascot to do the same to you when your team plays your opponent on their home field. Get creative with your entry and connect it with music. Charge the mascot, take him down and then jump up and beat your chest and pump your fists in the air. This will pump up the crowd in anticipation of a victory by the home team. You may also have someone from your school or organization pose as the opponent's mascot and tackle him or perform an amusing skit where you conquer or humiliate the opponent in some way.

    Crowd Surf

    • Another way to engage fans in a game is to keep them busy during lulls in the action, breaks in play or otherwise monotonous activity on the field. The last thing you want as a mascot or home team is for fans to become so disengaged and bored that they sit quietly or worse, leave the game. Approach some fans in the student section or have a cheerleader approach with you, and talk with them about crowd surfing. Tell them that they will need to pass you up the rows of seats, lifting you above their heads. With many fans involved, it will be easy for them to lift you. When you are placed down, give high-fives and praise to the fans for moving you throughout the stands.

    Do the Wave

    • Get the crowd into the game by encouraging them to do the wave. Work with the public address announcer to come over the loudspeaker during a break in the action and alert the crowd to the impending wave. Signal the first section when to stand, and turn in a circle as the wave moves throughout the crowd, pointing at sections when it's about to get to them. Attempt to shoot T-shirts into the crowd in various sections at the same time they are standing to do the wave as a cool trick to show off your coordination and generosity.

    Breakdance

    • Perform a few mascot moves for the crowd, entertaining them with amusing breakdancing along the sideline or at center field during a break in play such as between quarters or at the half. Particularly in basketball, and if you wear a large head as part of your mascot costume, it will result in a thoroughly amusing performance. Coordinate with the PA announcer to play an upbeat hip-hop song for you to perform to. Incorporate dance moves into your breakdancing routine. At the end, when the music stops, fall down on your back with your arms out as if to show exhaustion. Then, as the applause reaches a crescendo, jump up and wave and clap at the crowd.
