How to Tie a Toga from a Bed Sheet

When an occasion arises that requires a Roman toga, you can quickly fashion one using two large sheets and some artful draping and pinning. A Roman toga requires a large amount of fabric to create the floor-length garment that ancient men wore in Rome. With a few basic supplies and a sewing machine, you can tie a toga from a bed sheet to create a realistic costume.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 white king-size top sheets
  • Sewing machine
  • White thread
  • White T-shirt (optional)
  • Large brooch
  • Thin belt (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two king sheets together with right sides of the sheets facing each other. Sew the sheets together along one long edge, using a half-inch seam allowance.

    • 2

Wear a white, short-sleeved T-shirt under the toga unless you prefer a bare chest being partially visible.

    • 3

Hold the fabric behind you with the seam running horizontally. Position the sheet so the bottom edge just touches the floor with approximately one-third of the fabric at your left and two thirds of the fabric at your right. You will have excess fabric around the head and shoulder area for draping.

    • 4

Place the fabric at your left side over your left shoulder and allow it to fall straight down in front of you.

    • 5

Wrap the fabric around you from the left shoulder, around your back and under your right arm. Continue wrapping the fabric around your front side and bring it back up to your left shoulder again. Throw the excess fabric over your left shoulder and allow it to cascade straight down your back. Your right shoulder and arm should be bare and your left shoulder and arm should have fabric draping over them neatly.

    • 6

Adjust the fabric wraps for comfort. It may take a couple of tries before you get the wrapping draped comfortably for walking and moving freely.

    • 7

Fasten a brooch at the top of your left shoulder --- through all the fabric layers --- to hold the toga securely.
