How to Do Theatre Eyeliner for Men

Stage makeup is an important component to a successful production. Theatre lights can accentuate facial shadows while elevation and distance can cause an actor’s face and eyes to disappear before the audience. Applying theatre eyeliner to male actors will help counteract the effects of lighting and distance. Heavy eye shadow and dark mascara will help make the eyes look bigger and appear normal to the audience.

  • Eyeliner pencil (slightly darker than eyebrow color)
  • Matte white eye shadow

Instructions

    • 1

Accentuate the eyebrows using an eyeliner pencil in a color slightly darker than the eyebrow. Use light, gentle strokes to gradually darken the hairs. Avoid a heavy application to maintain a natural look.

    • 2

Lightly dust the brow bone and under eye with matte white eye shadow. Use an eye shadow sponge and apply the shadow along the bone just under each brow and underneath the bottom lashes.

    • 3

Apply an eye shadow that is slightly darker than the skin tone to the eyes. Use an eye shadow sponge to apply the shadow just below the brow bone and just above the eyelid.

    • 4

Apply a slightly darker shade of eye shadow along the top of the eyelid. Blend the shadow downwards using an eye shadow sponge.

    • 5

Line the top and bottom of the eyelids with a brown or black eyeliner pencil. Follow the seam where the lashes meet the eyelids.

    • 6

Brush the eyelashes with mascara in the same color used to line the eyelids.
