How to Do Burlesque Hair & Makeup

Burlesque has been looked down upon in legitimate circles for much of its history, but has been welcomed into the mainstream in recent years. American burlesque emerged as a popular form of entertainment in the early 1900s. Performers' hair and makeup evolved throughout the years before many theaters were forced to close in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Since the 1990s, women such as Dita Von Teese have pioneered a modern burlesque movement. They have popularized signature hair and makeup looks heavily influenced by the classic performers of the 1930s, and by the Hollywood glamour of 1940s pin-up girls. Burlesque styles range from simple to complex, but all project a classic look that is appropriate for any woman enjoying a night out of the town.

Instructions

  1. Hair

    • 1

Wet hair. Comb through and part hair on one side.

    • 2

Twist a small to medium section of wet hair, and coil it into a bun against your head. Pin in place with bobby pins. Repeat until all your hair is pinned in place. Allow hair to dry. Remove bobby pins to reveal flowing waves.

    • 3
A clip with some sparkle will catch the light, adding to the burlesque feel.

On the opposite side from your part, tuck the front section of hair above your ear and secure it with a decorative barrette. Avoid combing through and breaking up the waves. Spray liberally with hair spray.

    Makeup

    • 4

Apply a generous layer of foundation and concealer until your face is a completely blank canvas. Powder liberally to set the makeup and achieve a matte look.

    • 5
Liquid liner provides a slick, pigmented line, and won't wear off as easily as pencil.

Line top lash-line with liquid, black eyeliner, winging the liner out at the edges if desired. Apply two coats of black mascara to top lashes only.

    • 6

Fill in brows with brow pencil. This helps to define features and frame your face.

    • 7

Apply blush starting at the apples of your cheeks, in an upward sweeping motion toward your temples.

    • 8
Rich, red lips are the most essential component of the burlesque makeup look.

Apply red lipstick, and lightly dust with powder to set.
