In Act V scene 1, Lady Macbeth sleepwalks and tries to wash her hands, saying "Out damned spot! Out I say!" She is trying to cleanse herself both physically and mentally from the guilt of the murder, but she is unable to do so.
The water imagery is suggestive of the power of guilt to haunt and torment the perpetrator of a crime . Lady Macbeth is consumed by her guilt and feels that she can never escape the consequences of her actions, even though she has tried to wash away the physical evidence.
