What is a tour de force?

Tour de force literally means "a journey of strength" in French. As a literary and performing arts term, it refers to a work that is technically difficult to execute, usually because of its length, scale, or complexity. Some examples include James Joyce's Ulysses, Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, and Cirque du Soleil's Cirque du Soleil: Quidam.
