DIY Rain Stage Sound Effect

If you're involved in the production of a live theater performance, you have several options available when it comes to making rain sound effects. You can use audio sound effects played over a stereo system, or you can emulate the sound of rain by building a rain stick. Using a rain stick makes the rain feel as though it's coming directly from the stage, as opposed to speakers which are usually spread out around the theater. You can learn how to build a rain stick by following a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw dots on the spiraled seam of the tube using the marker. Place each dot about a half inch apart.

    • 2

Insert a nail into each dot.

    • 3

Wrap your packing tape around the tube so that you're securing the nails to the tube.

    • 4

Cut circles out of the paper large enough to cover each end of the tube. Place one of the circular pieces of paper over one end of the tube and use the packing tape to keep it in place.

    • 5

Grab a handful of the uncooked rice and place it inside the open end of the tube.

    • 6

Add the other circular piece of paper to the open end of the tube and use the packing tape to keep it in place.

    • 7

Flip the rain stick over repeatedly. The rice crashing against the nails inside the tube will create a rain sound effect.
