How to Throw a Cabaret

Cabarets have a long history of providing varied, often racy and very lively entertainment to people looking for an interesting night out. Cabarets are performances whose schedule can include singing, theater, dance and comedy, depending on the location. Cabarets originated in France during the 19th century, but later the entertainment spread to Germany, the United States and then onto other countries as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble a group of stage performers, singers and comedians. You don't need to have them all, but at least a couple of these talents will be required. If you have a couple of people you can think of who are capable of more than one kind of performance entertainment, it would be a good idea to bring them into your group. This will save you some organizational effort and maybe money. Cabaret groups vary their performances frequently, and it's very important to have the talent needed to slip from comedy to song and then on to something else.

Find a venue in which you can hold regular appearances. Or, you should try to book your performance group to multiple venues on a rotating circuit. This will make your chances of success greater and make you less dependant on one theater, bar or nightclub that might decide to fire you or change its entertainment themes.

    • 3

Create an entertaining and thought provoking schedule of entertainment routines. Cabaret groups often include sexually suggestive or controversial topics, so, depending on your venue and crowd, be sure to think about things like burlesque shows, political satire and dark or edgy comedy plays and routines. You should also include dance and song if possible.

Create or buy whatever props, costumes and makeup you're going to need. If you want to keep your performances entertaining and lively, you'll need a varied routine schedule. This is going to mean plenty of costume changing and possibly makeup use. The more colorful your performance group looks, the more effective your performances are likely to be, as long as the actors themselves have the actual talents they need.
