How to Throw a Book Signing Party

With the explosion of self-publishing, more authors than ever are seeking promotion and marketing techniques. One way of promoting your self-published book is to hold a book signing, an event that will allow you to connect with fans and sell additional copies of your book.

Instructions

    • 1

Call around or visit local bookstores, gift shops and libraries. Prepare a list of all possible venues and then contact each and explain to them what you hope to do. Venues may be open to your book signing if the owners think it will draw more customers.

    • 2

Make or order signs. Include on the poster the title of the book, your name, a photo of the book cover and your own picture. Note on the poster any of your outstanding achievements, especially positive reviews or blurbs for the book. Don't forget to add the day, time and venue for the signing.

    • 3

Arrive early enough to set up a table. Typically, authors sit behind a table to sign books. Check the seating arrangements in front of the table if you intend to read or speak.

    • 4

Designate someone to keep the line moving. If there are many people waiting, someone must make sure the line does not come to a standstill because one person is becoming overly friendly with you.

    • 5

Keep your cool. Smile and show courtesy. You are in the business of selling books and the customer is always right. No matter how much someone is attempting to engage you in a debate, be polite.

    • 6

Accept offers to be photographed. Some people may ask to be photographed with you when you sign their book. Always accept the offers. The key is to keep the customers happy so they will buy more books. And given the speed at which people post online, it doesn't hurt to have your reputation as a pleasant and approachable author posted while the event is still going on!

    • 7

After signing books, circulate and chitchat with the audience. Consider giving a brief speech or a reading from your book. Always remember to thank the staff of the venue.
