How to Attach Prosthetics Without Spirit Gum

You may love acting and wearing costumes, but if you have sensitive skin, the spirit gum used to hold on costume prosthetics can be uncomfortable and even cause a rash or other type of breakout. Spirit gum can also be difficult to find outside of a specialty costume store or acting supply store. There is a very natural alternative to spirit gum that is available for you to choose the next time you wish to apply prosthetic pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the prosthetic that you wish to attach. You should attach all of your prosthetic pieces before applying any makeup.

    • 2

Clean your skin thoroughly with a good cleanser in the area where you plan to apply the prosthetic.

    • 3

Apply a coat of benzoin tincture around the edges of your prosthetic using the included brush. Benzoin tincture is an old, traditional antiseptic that can be found in most large drugstores. It is made from natural plant resin, making it an ideal alternative to spirit gum.

    • 4

Position the prosthetic and lay it into place. Hold the piece in position until the benzoic tincture is set before releasing the prosthetic and checking the final result.

    • 5

Remove the prosthetic by gently peeling it away. Benzoin tincture forms a solid resin, just like spirit gum, and can be removed in the same manner.
