How to Live Without TV & Internet

Living without TV and Internet can be extremely difficult at first. When you cancel your cable and Internet service or move to a location where they are unavailable, you may experience a feeling of withdrawal, desperately longing for information and entertainment. The longer you go without TV and Internet, however, the easier it becomes and the less you notice their absence. In fact, you may even find yourself enjoying your new tech-free life. Whether by choice or necessity, living without TV and Internet can be pain-free and even enjoyable.

Instructions

    • 1

Make specific, concrete plans for using your new free time and stay busy to break old habits. For example, if you used to eat breakfast while watching the morning news, substitute a newspaper for TV or eat outdoors for a new perspective. If you watched your favorite shows from 8 to 10 nightly, schedule other activities for that time, such as going to the gym, visiting with friends or getting housework done. If you want to do more reading, make a list of specific books you'd like to read. If you're trying to devote more time to a side business, list goals to accomplish each week.

    • 2

Focus on the benefits of living without TV and Internet --- such as saving money, simplifying your life or spending time doing other things you enjoy --- not what you are losing by giving them up. Write down these benefits and post them where you can be easily reminded of them.

    • 3

Track your new free time and money and the things you accomplish with them, for a concrete reminder (and ongoing proof) of the value of living without TV and Internet. If you are giving up TV and Internet for financial reasons, keep track of how much money you save each month. If you are saving for a specific goal, such as a vacation or a new car, plot your growing savings on a graph. If you are devoting your extra time to building a small business, keep a running list of specific tasks accomplished.
