San Antonio, Texas Acting Schools

From Carol Burnett to Tommy Lee Jones, San Antonio, Texas, has been called home by a number of famous actors and actresses. As of early 2011, there are a number of acting schools operating in the greater San Antonio area, offering instruction in both film and theater for a variety of age groups.
  1. Texas Actors Workshop

    • The Texas Actors Workshop offers classes for students of all ages and all experience levels. Taught by acting coach John McAteer, as of 2011, classes involve on-camera acting and analysis. Core instruction focuses on character creation, development and honing of improvisational skills, as well as training in acting for commercials. At the Texas Actors Workshop students can also learn how to best navigate the audition and interview processes. Classes include Acting for Fun, Children's Acting, levels one, two and advanced. Fees are $45 per class for adults and $35 for children.

    L.A. Performing Arts

    • At L.A. Performing Arts, classes are offered in both film and theater, as well as dance and vocal training. Classes are available for students age 2 to adult. Classes include Acting for TV and Film, Improvisation, Theater, Broadway, Advanced Acting Techniques, Master's Level Workshops and Private Coaching. Cost is $55 per month, as of 2011, which includes one one-hour class per week. Discounts are given when booking for several months at a time. A $30 annual registration fee also applies. Prices for private, one-on-one instruction vary.

    Acting Up Creative Drama Academy

    • Acting Up Creative Drama Academy (AUCDA) offers classes for both adults and children. Adult classes are for people 16 years of age and older. Cost is $150 for six weeks as of 2011. AUCDA also offers a variety of creative drama classes for children as well as an after-school program that combines child care with rudimentary creative theater instruction. Gigi Parker Hudnall is the director of AUCDA. She has been teaching theater and drama since 1988.

    Crystal Sea Drama Company

    • The Crystal Sea Drama Company primarily offers acting classes for kindergarten through grade 12 students. Founded by Irene Miller and Marla Ripps, classes are held weekly. Adult acting instruction is also available on occasion. Taught by Miller, adult classes provide instruction in "physicalization" and characterization through a combination of dramatic exercises, games, and scene work. Cost is $20 for one class, $50 for three classes, or five classes for $75 as of 2011. CSDC also rents out its studio for independent rehearsals, workshops and private, unaffiliated instruction.
