Why did Marlon Brando refuse an Oscar?

Marlon Brando refused to accept his Oscar for Best Actor for his role in "The Godfather" in 1973. He did so to protest the film industry's treatment of Native Americans and to bring attention to the plight of the Lakota Sioux at Wounded Knee.

He sent Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American actress and activist, to the ceremony in his place. She delivered a brief speech about the situation, which was met with both applause and boos from the audience.

Brando's actions were controversial at the time, but they ultimately contributed to raising awareness about Native American issues. They also helped to make the Academy Awards ceremony a platform for social and political activism.
