Who were plays specifically written for?

The plays of ancient Greece and Rome were specifically written for the citizens of those societies. In Athens, for example, plays were performed as part of religious festivals and were attended by the entire population of the city. In Rome, plays were often performed in theaters that were built for the purpose of entertainment, and were attended by a wide variety of people, from the emperor and his court to the common people.
