Jean-Baptiste Lully was the leading composer of opera in France and made a vast contribution to the repertoire. He was an Italian and French composer, instrumentalist, and dancer who worked at the court of Louis XIV. Lully established the French national style of opera and is credited with inventing an early form of the ballet de cour. He created the tragédie-lyrique, a new genre of French baroque opera. Lully's works include the operas Cadmus et Hermione, Alceste, and Armide, and the ballets Le Bourgeois gentilhomme and Le Triomphe de l'Amour.
