Why does friar go to the churchyard in act v?

Friar Laurence visits the churchyard in act V of _Romeo and Juliet_ to inform Romeo of Juliet's seeming death. He plans to take Romeo away from Verona to Mantua, where he can live in safety and secrecy until the feud between the Montagues and Capulets is resolved.
