Games and Activities for Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur

"Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Game," by David A. Adler is part of the series of "Cam Jansen" books for children. The character, Cam, is a girl with an amazing photographic memory who uses her gift to solve mysteries. In "Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Game," Cam is invited to a birthday party where she is invited to play a dinosaur game and ends up solving a mystery. Use games and activities to enhance the study of "Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Game" book.
  1. Games

    • Engage children in games to enhance the reading of the book, "Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Game." Fill a jar or receptacle full of small plastic dinosaurs and invite children to guess how many dinosaurs are in the jar. This is the game featured in the book. Give a prize to the child who guess is closest to the correct number.

      Play a game of musical chairs, as featured in the book. Set chairs in a circle and have enough for all the players, minus one. Play music while the players walk around the circle. When the music stops, each player must find a seat. The player who is without a chair is out of the game. Remove another chair and continue the game. Remove one chair after each round until there is only one chair remaining.

    Crafts

    • Use crafts to supplement the reading of "Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Game." Read the book to students and ask them to draw their own illustrations before showing them the pictures in the book. Have each child choose a particular scene to draw. compare the children's drawings to the illustrations in the book.

      Another craft project to enhance the book is to have children create a camera similar to the one featured on the pages of the book. Paint a small, rectangular box black. Cut a small white circle and glue it to the front as a lens. Glue a cap to the top of the camera to serve as a button and complete the camera.

    Imaginative Play

    • Engage children in imaginative play based on the story. Have students make up their own mystery situation and play together to solve it just as Cam and her best friend, Eric, do in the book series.

      Have children act out the book. Create costumes such as a red yarn wig that resembles Cam's hair. Put on the performance for parents and friends.

    Other Games & Activities

    • There are many games and activities that can be played to enhance the reading of the Cam Jansen book. Create a memory games to see which player has the best photographic memory like Cam. Show students a tray full of objects. Let them study the tray for a few minutes. Leave the room with the tray and remove one object. Return with the tray and see which players can figure out what item is missing.

      Another memory game to use with the book is to use index cards to make pairs of items found in the book. For instance, draw a picture of Cam or a dinosaur on two index cards. Make at least ten pairs of cards and then turn cards over and let children play a matching memory game where they attempt to find the matching cards.
