In the Tempest why did Prospero freeze Ferdinand?

In Shakespeare's play, "The Tempest," Prospero does not freeze Ferdinand. However, he does use magic to charm Ferdinand and make him infatuated with Prospero's daughter, Miranda, when they first meet.
