What happens to John Proctor in the end of Crucible?

In the end of Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible", John Proctor is arrested and executed for witchcraft during the Salem witch trials. He is initially exonerated when Mary Warren, a young girl who had accused him, recants her testimony. However, Abigail Williams, another accuser, accuses Mary of being a witch herself, leading to Mary changing her mind and reaffirming her accusations against Proctor. Proctor is found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. Despite the efforts of his wife, Elizabeth, to save him, Proctor is ultimately executed.
