What were the plots in commedia usually about?

The plots in commedia dell'arte were usually about love, jealousy, rivalry, and trickery. They often involved mistaken identities, slapstick humour, and physical comedy. The characters were often stock characters, such as the innamorati (young lovers), the vecchi (old men), the zanni (servants), and the capitano (a boastful soldier). The plots were often farcical and improbable, and they were often resolved through a deus ex machina, such as the arrival of a long-lost relative or a sudden change of fortune.
