Why Romeo be with Rosaline in the beginning of play?

Romeo is not with Rosaline in the beginning of the play. He starts off lovesick over her because she is beautiful noblewoman, but she has rejected his advances. This rejection leaves Romeo depressed and heartbroken, and it is in this state that he meets Juliet.
