What is the original plan for killing Hamlet?

The original plan for killing Hamlet is to poison him to death. Claudius, the King of Denmark and Hamlet's uncle, plots with his advisor, Polonius, to pour poison into Hamlet's ear while he is sleeping. This plan fails, however, when Hamlet catches wind of it and switches the poisoned chalice with a regular one, causing Claudius to accidentally drink it himself and die.
