The Best Musicals of the 21st Century

Musicals combine plot and character development with moments that allow the characters to burst out into song. While many of the best known musicals were released in the 20th Century, plenty of acclaimed musicals have been released since the start of the new millennium. Multiple 21st Century musicals have been nominated for Academy Awards, placed on all-time lists by critics or fans and received favorable reviews.

    • "Across the Universe" is a 2007 musical that reworks songs by the Beatles. The musical tells the story of two young lovers trying to figure out what they believe during the Vietnam War era. "Across the Universe" received a perfect score from "Chicago Sun-Times" critic Roger Ebert and an eight out of 10 rating from the "New York Times."

    "Moulin Rouge!"

    • "Moulin Rouge!" was named one of the American Film Institute's favorite musicals of all time and was nominated for eight Academy Awards. Released in 2001, "Moulin Rouge!" features Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The musical centers on a woman who finds herself torn between two men vying for her affection.

    "Nine"

    • Released in 2009, "Nine" tells the story of a film director trying to write his next big piece while figuring out how to handle his personal demons. "Nine" was given eight out of 10 rating points by the "Wall Street Journal" and "Variety." Among the featured actors are Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz.

    "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India"

    • "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India" is among the top 10 musicals of all time according to the voters on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Tired of being ruled and abused by their British leaders, Indian villagers decide to do something about it and try for their freedom. This musical features Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh.

    "Enchanted"

    • "Enchanted" is a 2007 musical that takes elements from fairy tales and mixes with with 21st Century life in New York. A princess winds up falling for a New York lawyer while the two try to work out cultural differences. "Enchanted" received at least an eight out of 10 rating from "L.A. Weekly," "Entertainment Weekly" and the "New York Times."

    "Dancer in the Dark"

    • "Dancer in the Dark" is a musical from 2000 starring musician Bjork. "Dancer in the Dark" is among the top 25 musicals of all time based on total IMDb votes. Known for her unusual singing voice in music circles, Bjork plays the role of a woman who brings her son to America in hope of a better life only to begin losing her sight and get falsely accused of crimes.

    "Veer-Zaara"

    • "Veer-Zaara" is an Indian musical released in 2004. "Veer-Zaara" received a perfect rating from the "San Francisco Chronicle" and an eight out of 10 rating from "Variety." An Indian pilot named Veer and a Pakistani girl named Zaara fall in love despite their races and the feelings of those around them. While Zaara is unhappily engaged, Veer sets out to join his life with hers.
