Did maria run away with tony in west side story?

Maria and Tony did not run away together in West Side Story. They ran away together to get married, but at their apartment, they learn from Chino (a Shark) that Bernardo has been killed. Tony tries to go back to the West Side to look for Bernardo's killer but is killed himself by Chino with Maria watching.
