Government Literary Grants

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), an independent federal agency, is responsible for most government literary grants. The NEA awards grants to individuals, non-profit organizations and educational institutions and to state, local and regional art councils. Literary grants may provide fellowships and stipends for artists to complete projects. Grants may support community outreach or education programs, projects that preserve cultural literary traditions or initiatives to expand access to literature by under-served populations.
  1. Literature Fellowships Translation Projects, NEA

    • The NEA provides literature fellowships for creative English translation of published foreign-language literary works. Translation projects may involve drama, prose or poetry. Eligible applicants include individuals who have published a minimum of 20 translated pages of creative literature translation, a translated novel or other publication or a translation of a professionally-produced play.

The NEA does not support self-publication, scholarly work or work required for academic degrees. Grant awards are for $12,500 or $25,000 for one-year projects. The NEA funds extended projects up to two additional years. Applicants must apply using the Grants.gov website. The application deadline is in January.
