Why were the members of band on titanic considered heroes?

The members of the Titanic's band, led by Wallace Hartley, are considered heroes because they continued to play music as the ship sank, supposedly helping to maintain order and calm among the passengers. Hartley and the band refused to leave their posts and played until the very end, thereby showing great courage, selflessness and dedication. Their actions allowed many passengers to face the disaster with greater composure and some passengers later said they drew strength from the band's music.
