Why did upham not help melish in Saving Private Ryan knife scene?

In the movie "Saving Private Ryan", Upham did help Mellish during the intense knife fight scene against the German soldier. After Mellish was stabbed in the back, Upham quickly and bravely tackled the German soldier and disarmed him, saving Mellish's life.
