Why does Hamlet stab through the curtains or arras in room?

In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Hamlet only stabs through the arras in his mother's bed chamber upon hearing a voice from behind it. However, he mistakenly kills Polonius, the chamberlain, who was hiding there to eavesdrop on the conversation between Hamlet and his mother, Queen Gertrude.
