What does a circus barker do?

Circus barkers, also known as spielers or pitchmen, were individuals associated with traditional circuses or carnivals who promoted an act, circus performer, or other attraction with an elaborate spiel and exaggerated or even false statements to a passing audience. The circus barker would employ loud vocal techniques, humorous anecdotes, gestures, and flamboyant speech patterns to captivate potential customers. He would attempt to convince people to spend their money and enjoy these shows by highlighting some act’s most prominent highlights or features with excitement and exaggeration.
