How did Orlando Bloom break his ribs filming the Lord of Rings?

Orlando Bloom did not break his ribs filming "The Lord of the Rings". He did, however, suffer a serious injury during filming.

While filming the scene where Legolas leaps from a tower onto a warg, Bloom fractured his ankle after landing awkwardly. This injury, however, happened on the second unit set, not the main set where most of the main cast was filming.

The injury forced him to miss a couple of weeks of filming, but he was able to return and finish the movie.
