Bardock first appeared in the "Bardock - The Father of Goku" special, which aired in Japan on October 17, 1990, and was later released in the US in 1994.
While this is the most common way to reference his first appearance, it's not technically an episode of the main Dragon Ball Z series.
Bardock's appearance in the anime is a separate special, not included in the normal episode count.
