How was John Lennon murdered?

On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman, a deranged fan, at the entrance of his New York City apartment building, The Dakota. Lennon was returning to his apartment with his wife Yoko Ono after a recording session at the Record Plant studio. Chapman had waited for several hours, and when Lennon approached, he fired five shots from a .38-caliber revolver, striking Lennon four times in the back. Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 40 years old.
