What is the children and young persons act 2008?

The Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 2008 (asp 11) seeks to improve the wellbeing and protection of Scotland’s children and young people.

It:

- Sets out a series of principles and values under which people working with children and young people should operate

- Introduces a new legislative duty to improve the wellbeing of children and young people on all the bodies who support and work with them, including local authorities and the Scottish Government.

- Changes the framework for the provision of protection and care to those who need it, including new provisions on children in the penal system and children at risk

- Sets out new arrangements for the children’s hearing system to improve its effectiveness and fairness

- Aims to improve the provision of support and assistance for families, including new provisions on parenting and the introduction of children’s reporters.
