How to Cite an MLA Article From a Book With Authors

Most of the essays and papers you'll write as an undergrad or graduate student will require you to use MLA (Modern Language Association) style to cite your sources. As you conduct your research, make sure to jot down a few notes about each source you use, so that when the time comes for you to complete a Works Cited page or add endnotes and footnotes to your paper, you can reference these notes to easily cite the source. If you're citing an article from a book with several authors, you'll need to note the article's authors, the name of the book, pages cited and other publication information.

Instructions

    • 1

List the authors of the article first. Write the last name of the first author, followed by a comma and his first name. If there is only one other author, then write her first and last name as it would normally appear. If there are multiple authors, write "et al." after the first author's name. For example: "Shira, Michael and Stuart Johnson" or "Shira, Michael et al."

    • 2

Write the title of the article in quotation marks, then note the name of the book. For example: "Shira, Michael and Stuart Johnson. "Matt Swings for the Fences." Minneapolis Sports Stories."

    • 3

Note the book's editor(s) and where it was published. Next, list the publishing company and publishing year, separated by a comma. For example: "Matt Swings for the Fences." Minneapolis Sports Stories. Ed. Joe Miller and Bradley Miller. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1997."

    • 4

List the pages on which the article was published, and end the citation with "Print." For example: "Matt Swings for the Fences." Minneapolis Sports Stories. Ed. Joe Miller and Bradley Miller. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1997. 124-145. Print"
