What did Tim the ostler do in highwayman?

In the poem, Tim the Ostler is the owner of the inn where Bess, the highwayman's lover, stays. He acts as a lookout for Bess and the highwayman and, when the highwayman is captured, informs Bess to escape as quickly as possible.
