What is the Broadway wicked about?

Synopsis

The story begins in Oz during the events of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and introduces two young women who couldn't be more different. Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, is a headstrong and misunderstood girl who is born with emerald-green skin. Galinda, the future Good Witch of the North, is a beautiful and popular blonde who has always gotten everything she's ever wanted.

Despite their differences, Elphaba and Galinda become friends at Shiz University, a magical academy where they study magic. However, their friendship is tested when Elphaba is accused of being a spy for the evil Wizard of Oz. Galinda sides with the Wizard, and Elphaba is forced to flee the university.

Elphaba goes on a journey to discover her true identity and destiny, and along the way she meets several interesting characters, including the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. She also comes face-to-face with the Wizard of Oz, who turns out to be a powerful but corrupt man.

In the end, Elphaba must decide whether to use her powers for good or for evil. She ultimately chooses to use her powers to help the people of Oz, and she becomes a beloved figure in Ozian history.

Themes

Wicked explores several themes, including good vs. evil, the nature of friendship, and the importance of self-acceptance. The show also challenges traditional ideas about heroism and villainy, and it suggests that there is often more to people than what meets the eye.
