How to Identify Music Titles From Small Sections of Music

We've all been there---you hear a great song on the radio that ends all too soon, but the DJ never announces the title. You spend all day annoyed and frustrated that you can't remember the name of that one song. But don't despair. There are still ways to name that tune, even if you only heard a small section of the original music.

Instructions

Do an internet search. If the song has lyrics, enter a few of them into the search engine to see what pops up. Often you can find the title and the artist quickly and easily this way, with results showing the song, musician's picture and albums. If nothing comes up during your first search, enter a different set of lyrics into the search engine. Using the chorus can be particularly helpful.

Research the artist. If you recognize the singer, but not the title of the song, examine the albums that artist has produced. Sometimes the title to the song is similar to the lyrics. Going through an artist's albums one by one can sometimes yield the title.

Ask around. Enlist the help of your friends, family members and even music store employees. Sing or hum the part of the music that you know. If your acquaintances listen to the same radio station, or have similar musical tastes, they may be able to identify the title for you.

Call or email the radio station. DJs often have set playlists that they use. If you can identify the date and time the song was playing, the station may be able to tell you the title. Visit the station's website. Some have lists of songs they've played in the last 24 hours and even search engines that help identify songs and their titles.

Use a search engine formulated specifically for song titles. For instance, Midomi is a web tool that not only allows you to enter anything you know about the song, but also lets you sing or hum part of it (if you have the technology available) to help in identification. Getlyrical and Lyricsfly are two more similar sites for people trying to find information about their favorite songs.

Open up your query to the web. Go to a musical chat room or forum and ask if anyone knows the title to the song.
