How to Make Rap Hooks

The essence of any rap song is its chorus, or hook. This is the part of the song that gets repeated between verses and catches the listener's ear. Surprisingly, these hooks are not hard to write, though it can be tricky to write them well. All hooks follow a steady beat, most rhyme, and can be anywhere from four to 16 bars long. Of course, how many syllables you want to include in each line and what kind of rhyme you want to use are entirely up to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to a variety of different beats until one catches your attention or really gets you feeling it. Use this beat as the beat of your song.

    • 2

Write down the different feelings or thoughts that come to mind when you listen to the beat that you have chosen.

    • 3

Read through the list of feelings and thoughts that you made. While reading this list, choose those feelings and thoughts mostly closely related to each other or that you are the most passionate about.

    • 4

Write as many bars as you need to based on the feelings and thoughts that you have grouped together.

    • 5

Take a break from writing for a short period of time (anywhere from an hour to a day).

    • 6

Edit the bars that you have written so that they flow with the beat. If you want your hook to rhyme and it doesn't, add rhymes into the end of each bar.
