How to Become a Singer at Age 13

Making it as a performer (whether it be singing, acting or dancing) is never an easy task, but for those who have talent and the passion and drive to match, it is not an impossible feat. For those under age (minors under 18), making it in the showbiz industry has an added level of difficulty, especially in states where child entertainment labor laws come in to play. Nonetheless, this very creative field can be penetrated by those who are committed to success.

Instructions

    • 1

Be honest with yourself (and your child if you're the parent). You don't want the embarrassing experience of those American Idol rejects. Can your child truly sing? Do you believe her talents are so good that you're ready to invest a lot of time and effort towards the pursuit of this dream? If so, perhaps get a second opinion from a professional. Visit a voice coach for an initial consultation and have him evaluate your child's singing abilities.

Take voice classes. Classes are an inevitable necessity for those pursuing a career in entertainment. Aspiring child singers are encouraged to take voice lessons with a reputable voice coach. You can search the Internet and ask friends for advice on reputable classes and coaches.

    • 3

Prepare a demo tape. You don't necessarily have to spend thousands on creating your first demo tape, but a sampling of the singer's voice is necessary in order to gain representation (an agent or manager) or to be signed by a record company. You can hire someone to create a tape for you, or create one yourself with simple at-home recording equipment.

Seek representation. An agent or manager that specializes in singers - specifically those who are under age 18 - will help you in your search for jobs and record deals. You can send a head shot and demo tape out to multiple agencies by purchasing lists of their addresses on-line. Additionally, there are websites that offer you the chance to submit electronically in turn, saving you hundreds on mailing submissions.

Go on auditions. Once you have representation you will be sent out on auditions. Additionally, you can seek out your own opportunities to audition for small parts like plays, community events and even commercials. You may even want to consider trying out for something like American Idol once you are old enough to compete. No matter what, if you truly want to be a singer, don't give up. You will likely audition many times before you will make it. If you and many others believe you have a great voice, keep practicing, keep taking classes and keep auditioning.
