How to Become a Professional R&B Singer

R&B (rhythm and blues) is a popular music genre that has been dominated by some of the greatest artists. R&B singers have a personality and distinctive vocal quality that puts them in a class of their own. Being an R&B artists requires work, dedication, and a level of charisma to attract an audience wanting to listen to your singing. Goal setting and training your voice will prepare you for a successful career as a R&B singer based on your career objectives.

      Assess your current vocal skills. R&B artist must have an extensive vocal range. Determine your strengths and weaknesses as an artist so you can specifically seek vocal coaches or self-study to work with those strengths and weaknesses.

      Determine your ultimate goal as an R&B singer. Do you want to have worldwide fame like Mary J. Blige or would you just like the distinction of being a professional R&B artist in your area? Your goal will determine the path you must take to gain success. Keep in mind that careers in music can require much dedication for a singer to become well known.

      Start singing at local venues to gain a fan base in your local area. You can perform at churches or you can contact local clubs in your area, as well as sing at "open mic" nights in your area. You can locate these events and venues by looking in your local newspaper's entertainment and happenings section, local online listings, or a phone book.

      Create a demo tape showcasing your vocal talent. The demo tapes can be made in recording studios in your area that may charge an hourly rate. Rates can be as little as $25 an hour and up. Make sure you choose approximately two or more songs that are catching and show your vocal range. Usually only the first minute of your demo will be heard before they make a judgment about your ability.

      Find a manager to assist you with your R&B career. A manager is responsible for grooming you for a successful career. She can assist you with finding performing venues and seeking a record deal. Some R & B singers get gigs as backup vocalists for recordings or on tours. Managers may charge a percentage of any money made from performing. Locate potential managers through your chamber of commerce or online networks, or hire someone you know to be your manager. Some of the biggest celebrities had their parents initially manage their careers.

      Work on an image and style for your career. Most R&B artists have unique styles that separate them from other artists. Determine which qualities are unique to you and make sure those are enhanced. You may also want to consider hiring an image consultant to ensure that the image you want to portray is well received by your audience.

      Submit your demo tape to record companies to try to obtain a record deal. You can contact both larger, well-known record companies, like Arista or Virgin records, and smaller labels. Conduct record label searches on line to locate details on submitting your demo (see Resources).
