Grants for Show Choir Costumes in Schools

Show choirs are performance groups that combine singing and theatrical elements of dancing and costumes; they are commonly an extracurricular activity or part of an after-school program. Costumes can be expensive, and not all show choir programs have funding for them in their budget. If they meet the grant eligibility requirements, some show choirs can apply for a musical grant to offset the cost of their costumes.
  1. Music Matters Grant

    • The Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation offers the Music Matters Grant for school music programs where instrumental or vocal musical education is the main focus. Requirements for the grant are that the recipient must be a public school or a nonprofit music program, the school must have a pre-established music program with an assigned music teacher, and the music program must have a specific need and meet non-discrimination policies. A school show choir program at a public school would be eligible because it includes vocal musical education and has a specific need for costumes. The award is between $1,000 and $12,000.

    Mockingbird Foundation

    • The Mockingbird Foundation was founded by fans of the band Phish and aims to provide funding for public school and nonprofit music programs. To be eligible, the music program must fit into one of the Foundation's music, education or children program areas. Grants are given in amounts from $50 to $5,000. A school show choir would be eligible to apply under the music program area because show choir "encourages and fosters creative musical expression in vocal form," or in the children program area if program participants are 18 years old or younger.

    Target Foundation

    • Show choirs in the St. Paul/Minneapolis metropolitan area can apply for the Target Foundation Arts Grant. The grant is for programs or organizations that provide affordable arts opportunities to the community. A show choir would be eligible to apply if its performances are open to the community.
