How to Design Your Own Choir Robes

Many church and school choirs require members to wear choir robes when performing. This helps to create a display of visual conformity to go along with the auditory unison. The tradition of wearing choir robes is traced back to ancient Greece. Choir robes come in numerous colors and styles, but for a distinctive look, you may wish to design your own. For those with a background in fashion or drawing, this task should come easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to the members of the choir and get their feedback on the type of robe they'd like. Ask for opinions on colors, sleeve shapes and length, stripes or other shapes, and accents.

    • 2

Use the information from your discussion with the choir to design the robes. When choosing the options, take choir member opinions into consideration.

    • 3

Choose the style of the robe. You could go with something traditional, such as long sleeves, or a novel approach like short sleeves. Sleeve shapes can be open or closed: they can either hang free, or cling to the arm or wrist. While choir robes are traditionally floor length, knee-length robes are also an option.

    • 4

      Choose the type of fabric.

    • 5

Choose a color for the main part of the robe. This color will make up the majority of the choir robe and provide the biggest visual impact.

    • 6

Choose where on the robe that you'd like any stripes or other shapes to appear. You could add a stripe on each arm or one down the front or back, for example. Adding multiple colors to your design goes a long way to making your design stand out.

    • 7

Choose any accent pieces such as drapes or tassels.

    • 8

Sketch out three or four design ideas and present them to the choir for final approval. Use either a computerized illustration program or draw by hand. Have the choir vote on the final decision.

    • 9

Submit your design to a seamstress or company that can take your choir robe plans from paper to fabric.
