How to Design Your Own Chinese Tattoo

Whenever you decide to get a tattoo, it should represent something that means a lot to you, either for personal, spiritual or artistic reasons. Walking into a tattoo parlor and pointing at something from their sample book is an easy way to get a tattoo that you could regret. If you want a Chinese tattoo that represents something you care about, take the time and do research to prepare for the tattoo before you get it. Chinese symbols are classic tattoos because they combine individual expression with exotic and beautiful calligraphy. Traditional Chinese symbols include the Chinese zodiac, the yin yang, dragons, deer and the lotus flower.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose what you want your tattoo to represent or depict. Decide whether you want Chinese characters, words, phrases or actual images.

    • 2

Find the Chinese characters that represent the words you wish to include in your tattoo. Use an English to Chinese dictionary either at the library or online to find the actual characters for the words you want. If possible, consult a person who reads Chinese to verify that the characters you find match what you want to say.

    • 3

Sketch what you want the tattoo to look like even if you are not a great artist. Include relative size of images and Chinese characters, colors and shading.

    • 4

Consult a tattoo artist or talented drawer to make a pen and ink outline of the tattoo you want. The tattoo artist can use this to make a stencil so your tattoo looks exactly like your design.
