How to Arrange Boys in a Middle School Choir

The arrangement of a choir plays a large impact on its sound and the quality of the music they can deliver. While many choirs recently have adopted the mixed arrangement, where sopranos, tenors, bass and altos are thoroughly mixed, this arrangement is not suitable for a boys' choir because their voices are not strong enough to support this arrangement. Instead, a grouped placement in which the tenors are in front of the bass singers works well for a young, inexperienced choir.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which category each boy fits into. Typically there are four categories: Bass, alto, soprano or tenor. The category each boy fits into is dependent on their vocal range.

    • 2

Divide the boys into each of the categories and arrange them in an arc formation on the stage. The boys should be standing, not sitting, to increase their vocal ability.

    • 3

Place the soprano singers on the left-hand side of the stage and the alto singers on the right-hand side of the stage.

    • 4

Place the tenor singers in the front few rows in the center of the arc formation. This is the best place for tenors who are young and inexperienced.

    • 5

Place the bass singers at the back, behind the tenors in the center of the arc.
