How to Become a Better Karaoke Singer

Karaoke allows people to perform their favorite hits in front of a live audience of friends and strangers. While nearly anyone can stand onstage and perform a song, you can take a number of steps to improve your ability and stand apart from other karaoke singers. The majority of these steps involve the same simple technique required for improving your singing and performing abilities in general: practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a solid repertoire of songs to sing that fit your voice and personal style. Many karaoke singers have one or two favorite songs they like to sing each time they perform. Not every karaoke bar carries the same library of songs however; aim for a wide range of songs you can perform with confidence. Find songs that highlight your personality and showcase your voice appropriately. If you consider yourself a funny person, work on songs that have a light touch and allow you to have a little fun with the performance. If you are a more serious person, you may find slow, stirring songs more appropriate.

Practice singing every chance you get. You can sing when alone in the shower or car, or at home. Listen to the songs with headphones or over the speakers, paying attention to the way the singers handle the songs. You can download many karaoke songs off the Internet inexpensively, allowing you to practice with only your vocals and the music.

Get on stage often to fine-tune your performing ability. Voice ability is only one aspect of karaoke. Confidence, timing, and stage presence all add to the overall performance as well. The more you are onstage, the more confident you will become with the song and with performing in front of other people. Don't be afraid to experiment with a song or take on a new challenge. Karaoke is not a competition; the audience is there to support you.

Keep your voice in shape. Smoking can weaken your voice and cause it sound scratchy or out of key when you sing. Excessive drinking can make your slur your words or throw off your timing.
