Alton Edward Haley (July 19, 1926 – January 15, 2000) was an American gospel music singer and songwriter, the son of a part-Choctaw man and an African-American woman. He is best known as the founder and leader of the gospel group The Soul Stirrers, and for his rendition of "If I Could Help Somebody".
