Instructions

    • 1

Pick a location for your booth. If you have an extra closet or small room that can be converted into a soundproof booth, you can save a great deal of time and money by utilizing this space. If not, locate a suitable corner of your studio to serve as the basis of your design. For this article, we will assume that you will be using an attached, corner booth design.

    • 2

Design your booth. Begin by deciding on the dimensions of your booth. The size will depend on how you intend to use the booth and how much room you have available. Use this information to draw out a simple design by hand or with a computer design program. Use the diagram provided as a sample guide to aid in the design process.

    • 3

Purchase your materials. The construction materials will affect the quality of sound your booth will produce. If possible, purchase top-quality building materials to produce the best results.

    • 4

Prep the construction area by removing existing carpet or flooring and any other fixtures in the way.

    • 5

Using 2 by 4s, frame out the walls of your booth, according to the dimensions outlined in your plans.

    • 6

Attach the solid core door to your frame as shown in the diagram. Verify that the door is functional and opens fully before proceeding.

    • 7

Cover the exterior of the frame walls with drywall, fiberboard or plywood and secure with screws.

    • 8

Insert R11 insulation between the wall studs, completely filling all openings.

    • 9

Cover the interior of the frame walls with drywall, fiberboard or plywood and secure with screws.

    • 10

Drill holes to allow the installation of signal cables into the booth. Install all necessary cables before moving on.

    • 11

Drill a hole large enough to accommodate a heavy-duty extension cord at least 12 inches from the signal cables. Insert the power cord through the hole, leaving the female end and about 3 to 4 feet of cord inside the booth.

    • 12

Fill the gaps between the wall and floor, the wall and ceiling, booth wall and existing walls, as well as the holes for signal and power cables, using silicone caulk.

    • 13

Install the compression weather stripping and threshold seal to the frame of the door. Verify that all openings are sealed and the door operates correctly.

    • 14

Set up a microphone or amp and test the signal cables, as well as the power cord.

    • 15

Install any additional acoustical panels or padding to fine-tune the booth.
